Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a residential development within Nantwich, one of the ancient salt towns of Cheshire. A Roman settlement was certain to have existed at Nantwich, although its status, extent and actual focus remained elusive. Many Roman artefacts, including evidence of salt-making in the form of a few sherds of briquetage, had been found within the town, whilst two lead brine pans, a wooden tank and a cremation burial had been discovered at a site immediately to the north of the development area. Evidence of medieval salt-making had also been found in Nantwich. During the evaluation a Roman ditch, probably of the early 2nd century AD, was revealed close to the northern site boundary, and a later Roman post-hole was observed. The ditch may have related to the Roman occupation observed previously to the north. Artefacts included sherds of Roman and post-medieval pottery, small amounts of medieval pottery and tile, a prehistoric flint tool, a lead and iron spindle whorl and fragments of waste lead. It was concluded that surviving archaeological features and deposits at the site were probably confined to an area near the northern boundary. [AIP]
