Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to proposed residential redevelopment. Despite some evidence for early Neolithic activity in Islington, recent archaeological fieldwork adjacent to the site had produced no evidence for pre-medieval occupation. The work also indicated that the north side of Islington Green had tenements on at least part of it from the late medieval period onward and agricultural activity also took place. The north side of Islington Green seemed to have been built up by 1735 with a row of terrace houses, called Old Paradise Row. Part of the site was used as a music hall from the late 19th century until the 1950s. The south side of Islington Green was open space between Upper Street and Essex Road during the medieval and post-medieval periods. Only the north side was built on during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. According to map evidence houses, 13 to 17 Islington Green were cellared, but numbers 15 to 17 had been infilled. There was no other record of major ground disturbance, although there may have been some connected to the theatre. Although the 19th century dyeworks was located outside, but adjacent to, the proposed development area it may have led to below-ground contamination of the western part of the site. [Au(abr)]
