Abstract: |
An assessment in advance of development of the site revealed some potential for the recovery of prehistoric, Roman and medieval remains. A Roman farmstead and cemetery, a Viking axe-head and the probable sites of two medieval hospitals were known to have been located within the study area, however the limited number of previous archaeological investigations had meant a dearth of evidence to the precise nature of any activity. The construction of the railway in the 19th century may have had an effect on any archaeological deposits. Invasive methods of fieldwork were thought to be the most appropriate form of investigation should the need arise. [Au(abr)] |
