Abstract: |
Between June 1992 and February 1995 a desk-based assessment, field evaluation and excavations were carried out at the site proposed for a new prison. A toft which contained a possible cruck-built structure and some pits may have been laid out in the 12th or early 13th centuries. A pond was dug at a time when remodelling took place. A second enclosure was found and field boundary ditches and significant amounts of medieval pottery too. The results of the evaluation and excavations showed that a part of the dispersed settlement of Fazakerley had existed on the site, and that it had existed for about a century before its earliest documentary recording.
