Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed demolition of the Park Tavern and its replacement with a new block of ten apartments. The assessment established that the site was located within an Archaeological Priority Area. The study site's geology indicated that flint artefacts of Palaeolithic Age may be present in the Langley Silt Brickearth. The study site had a good archaeological potential for the Neolithic period. The study site had a good to very good archaeological potential for the Bronze Age and Iron Age periods. The study site had a good to very good archaeological potential for the Roman period. The study site had a generally low archaeological potential for the Saxon, early medieval and late medieval periods. However, a post-medieval Coaching Inn of c.1700, 'the Angel Inn', appeared to have been located on the site. Past post-depositional impacts on the site were described as variable. Beneath the existing Park Tavern, archaeological remains were thought likely to be significantly degraded. Elsewhere on the site archaeological remains were generally likely to have undergone only modern impacts, through past land-use. The proposed development, although largely sited over the Park Tavern could potentially have a significant archaeological impact in a number of areas. [Au(adp)]
