Abstract: |
An assessment was undertaken of the archaeological implications of an extension to a museum, within the grounds of Guildford Castle. Trenches excavated during a previous evaluation had suggested that medieval levels were sealed by an accumulation of archaeologically uninteresting deposits. It was concluded that the proposed development was likely to have a low archaeological impact in the area outside the King's Chambers, but that a watching brief should be maintained during works at this location. The area within the King's Chambers would be subject to a greater level of disturbance; it was recommended that deposits there should be fully excavated, although preservation in situ would be a preferable option.
