Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a retail and office development identified that evidence of human activity dating from the prehistoric period to the present had been recorded in the vicinity. Finds had included Palaeolithic flint axes, a Mesolithic flint core, an Iron Age figurine and Roman coins. Two Roman tombstones and other artefacts had also been found, and a dispersed cemetery had lain to either side of a Roman road which had followed the general alignment of modern High Holborn/Oxford Street. Saxon remains found in the area comprised a pit, a ceramic vessel and a loomweight, whilst the locations of several medieval buildings, a 17th century Civil War fort and two 17th century buildings had been recorded. It was noted that the proposed development would be likely to remove any archaeological deposits which may have survived previous development impacts on the site. It was considered likely that only small areas of archaeological stratigraphy and isolated cut features were likely to have survived such impacts. It was concluded that an archaeological evaluation could clarify the nature and survival of deposits and features. [AIP]
