Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment of 11.4ha of ancient woodland at Shirtcliff Wood identified three archaeological sites within the woodland itself. These sites included a series of strip field boundaries and the site of the Shirtcliffe Brook Colliery. All were identified as earthworks during the course of a site visit. Several sites were also identified within the vicinity of the ancient woodland, including the remains of a market cross, spot finds of medieval pottery and a 17th century manor house. Accordingly, there was a potential for identifying unrecorded archaeological remains during the course of Level 2 survey. [Au(abr)] |
