Abstract:
A planning application was lodged for planning permission for change of use for three 19th century buildings: a barn, stables and a cart shed. The barn was a grade II Listed Building. Much of the structure of the most important building, the barn, would be preserved inside modern cladding, and its size and mass would remain. Some alteration would be made including the insertion of an upper floor, and changes would also be made to the elevations of this building and to the stables building which was a small, much altered structure of little architectural merit. The single-storey cart shed was a basic farm building that will be partly demolished. Some groundworks would be necessary to implement the development scheme, including excavations within the buildings to form new floors and excavations elsewhere on the site to install services. These groundworks would have a limited impact on potential archaeological remains, and any exposed remains could be recorded in an archaeological watching brief during development. The impact of the development on the important building, the barn, was not assessed as being sufficient to mean that the development should be refused. The two remaining buildings were of considerably less importance and the proposed partial demolition and alterations were similarly not thought to mean that the development should be refused on heritage grounds. An archaeological watching brief during development and standing building recording were recommended. [Au(abr)]
