Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the proposed construction of a youth centre with sports facilites and resurfacing and landscaping. The study of historical maps, books, articles and archaeological evidence from the locale indicated that the site was located in the Plaistow Levels, which was gradually reclaimed for pastureland. The site remained undeveloped until the construction of terraced houses and buildings in the late 19th century. The archaeological potential for prehistoric artefacts and structures being recovered from the site was considered to be moderate. The potential for the discovery of finds from the Roman period was also considered to be moderate. The archaeological potential for Saxon and medieval remains was considered to be low. The potential for structures and features of post-medieval and modern date was moderate. The palaeo-environmental potential was high with the presence of alluvial deposits including peat on the site. Similar deposits in the vicinity of the site had been dated from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. The report concluded that further archaeological mitigation in the form of an archaeological evaluation may be necessary in the area of any piled buildings. [Au(adp)]
