Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in connection with the proposed redevelopment in the grounds of Taplow Court. Due to the proximity of the proposed redevelopment to important archaeological remains (principally comprising of an important princely Saxon burial mound which was situated within the churchyard of the demolished church of St Nicholas, along with a nearby Romano-British site and a concentration of prehistoric finds), a desk-based assessment and archaeological evaluation of the area of proposed redelopment was requested. The preliminary desktop study highlighted the use of the area from Mesolithic times onwards, with Anglo-Saxon remains of national significance represented by the Taplow burial mound, dated to the 7th century, and an adjacent church of probable 8th-9th century date.
