Abstract:
The assessment of the site at Broken Wharf stressed the importance of waterfront archaeology in London and concluded that the site lay in an area of high archaeological potential. It was expected that the site would contain deposits and structures from recent times back to the 12th century, and possibly as early as the 10th century or Roman period, together with information about the development of river regime from prehistory. It was felt likely that the remains of the medieval tenement layout would be at least partially present and that evidence regarding the function of the buildings and use may also have survived, as would post-medieval cellars and pits. Any development below the current basement slab would have therefore damaged the archaeological strata. The archaeological and historical indications from excavations in the locality confirmed that the site at Broken Wharf was of outstanding value. It formed part of a sequence of nationally important sites along the western waterfront of the City of London. The extant remains would be of great significance for research in the vicinity and beyond, with implications to other waterfront cities and towns in Britain and Europe. [Au(adp)]
