Abstract: |
Groundworks associated with the installation of a new filter in the water treatment works were identified as a possible threat to archaeological remains. Two Bronze Age barrows (SAM 10269) and a Beaker Period burial lay nearby. The footprint of the works was stripped under archaeological supervision, and the excavation of service trenches monitored. Extensive modern disturbance was identified, and it was likely that the topsoil from much of the site had been stripped or deep ploughed in the mid to late 20th century. Two features, probably dating to around the First World War, were found in the main area of excavation. No deposits of Bronze Age date were encountered. [Au(abr)] |
