Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. The site was not located in an area of high archaeological potential as defined by the Local Planning Authority. The site's archaeological potential for the early prehistoric periods was thought to be low. The site's archaeological potential for the Bronze Age period was thought to be moderate. Evidence for land division, agricultural activity, settlement and activity sites may be represented. The site's archaeological potential for the Iron Age and Roman periods was defined as low. The site's archaeological potential for the Saxon, early medieval, medieval and post-medieval periods was low. Evidence for land division and agricultural activity may be present. Previous land-use and development was likely to have had a significant archaeological impact. The scale of the proposed development indicated that the cumulative archaeological impact of demolition, site clearance and new construction was likely to be severe. Only where areas of open space were proposed which corresponded with existing open space was it likely that archaeological remains could be preserved in situ. Further archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was recommended. [Au(adp)]
