Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during renovation and drainage work at Hylands House, which dated from c. 1730. It had originally been a red-brick Queen Anne style mansion with stone quoins, but had been modified in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the watching brief, two brick piers which had formerly supported the ground floor were recorded in the east wing basement. In an external service trench, several walls and drains relating to earlier phases of the building were discovered, as well as the original west wing footings. Extending from the south-west corner of the house, westwards towards the stable block, was a backfilled vaulted brick passageway which had been used to deliver coal to the boiler room. At the front of the building, four blocked-up basement windows from the original 1730 house were recorded, along with a section of the original east-wing footings. A wooden beam in the original cellars and an area of floor joists in the east wing first floor hallway were also recorded. [Au(adp)] |
