Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken in advance of the construction of a proposed waste water treatments works and an associated outfall pipe. The desk-based study recorded 17 sites either within or immediately around the study area. Many of the sites were prehistoric lithic finds recovered by survey of the fields around Braystones, and one of these from within the study area comprised 25 working flakes. The site was adjacent to a small fresh water tarn, Lantern Moss Tarn, which had peat deposits surrounding it and was closely comparable to Ehenside Tarn, about 1.5km to the north, which was one of the most important Neolithic settlement sites in northern England. On the basis of the identified resource in and around the study area and potential parallels with nearby Ehenside Tarn, it was considered that the site had a high archaeological potential.
