Abstract:
Three trial trenches (6m, 9m and 15m by 2m) were excavated as an archaeological evaluation of the site prior to the determination of planning permission for the proposed residential development of the site. Trench 1 revealed the remains of an early post-medieval wall, together with associated demolition deposits. In addition, a series of later post-medieval structural elements were uncovered, including walls and a probable fireplace or hearth. Trench 2 contained a brick floor or plinth, together with a packed gravel surface, most likely related to the 18th-19th century occupation on the site. A machine cut sondage into the northern end of the trench revealed a series of deposits above the natural gravels, one of which contained pottery dating to the 11th-13th centuries. Trench 3 uncovered the site of a silted-up pond or small lake, together with a number of structural remains associated with the 19th century house formerly on the site. [Au(adp)]
