Abstract: |
<summary>An archaeological assessment was carried out prior to the construction of a new Scout and Guide building at the rear of the parish hall. The site is that of the supposed medieval St Helen's Church and a manor house. A ground radar survey and a resistivity survey were carried out, by Northumbrian Surveys Ltd and GeoQuest Associates respectively; trial-trenches were then excavated to examine the anomalies. A rectangular pit - probably the latrine pit of a Second World War army canteen - was found. No archaeological features were seen that could clearly be identified with the medieval church; an extensive stony layer could be interpreted as relating to the demolition of a building, or, alternatively, as the paving of a yard or court. The one wall located, although quite thick, was not especially substantial. It may have been part of an outbuilding, or served as the stone footings for a timber-framed structure. This building/structure may have formed part of the medieval manorial complex, although no dating evidence to support such a hypothesis was uncovered. {italon}AIP{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} NT96SE11 |
