Abstract: |
An archaeological assessment was undertaken on a site within the confines of the Royal Citadel. The Citadel had its origins in the late 16th century and has been in use as a military base since. It was concluded that the potential was there for surviving archaeological remains of medieval and post-medieval activity. More significantly, however, it was also noted that there may have been earlier prehistoric activity on the site, this being substantiated by the observation of carved figures, said to be Gog and Magog, before the construction of the Elizabethan Fort. Continuous watching briefs were recommended during the construction of the grease traps. [AIP] |
