Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches for a conservatory at the site of a house which had probably been built in 1595, although it had later been partly destroyed and rebuilt. The Duchess of Salisbury may have occupied an earlier residence at the site in 1493. During the watching brief, part of a small flint-walled building was recorded; it was found that the east wall of the present house had been built upon a wall of a similar construction. A post hole containing post-medieval pottery and tile was observed, and medieval pottery was recovered. It was concluded that a series of buildings which pre-dated the 16th century had been revealed. The walls may also have related to the garden walls, which seemed to represent the plan and forecourt of an earlier building. [Au(abr)] |
