Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks associated with the construction of the new footbridge across Upper Thames Street. Most of the excavated area was within the footprint of the partially demolished underground convenience. Two areas of pre-19th century material was found to survive outside of the footprint of the convenience. To the south a small section of chalk wall running north-south survived cut into an area of dumped material. The chalk wall construction suggessted that it was a foundation, not an upstanding or dockside wall. It was unclear if the surrounding dump was cut by, or dumped against the wall. The large amount of brick in the dump suggested its upper deposits, at least, were of post-medieval date. To the east a small section of brick vault had survived. The 16th century and later maps suggested that if it was a cellar it would have been under the open wharf behind Queenhithe rather than under one of the surrounding buildings. [Au(adp)] |
