Abstract:
Archaeological excavation was undertaken in advance of residential development. Archaeological features found on site ranged in date from early medieval to post-medieval. A wide variety of feature types were encountered including post holes, ditches, a well, foundation trenches and a possible kiln. The predominant date range was AD1150-1350, within which many phases of re-cutting of features had taken place. The first phase of activity was represented by a number of rubbish pits (probably associated with the settlement along the High Street) and ditches. The ditches seemed to have acted as drains taking water across the slope and off agricultural land. Evidence for industrial activity was also identified on site with the excavation of a small hearth or 'kiln' and the recovery of a plano-convex hearth bottom. The construction of a platform on top of which a building was erected may also have been associated with industrial activity. The remaining phases identified within the date range 1150-1350 consisted of both re-cut and new pits. The ditches did not appear to have been re-cut, suggesting rapid water movement had kept them reasonably clear. The archaeological evidence showed a steep decline in the use of the site after 1350, with very few features identified. Reasons for the decline in site use were not readily apparent, however, it was possible that environmental conditions had worsened or even that the 'Black Death' may have reduced the number of people able to work on the land.
