Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the site of a housing development. Earlier desk-top study had found that the lost Chantry Chapel of St Mary, a medieval structure with associated buildings which was probably demolished in the 18th century, may have been located within the site. Only one of the proposed buildings lay in the vicinity of the possible chapel site; the evaluation comprised a single trench, excavated within the footprint of this building. A watching brief undertaken during the construction of roads for the development had discovered severe truncation, caused by the construction of military barracks during the Second World War. During the evaluation, further evidence of modern truncation was revealed. A few sherds of medieval and 17th-18th century pottery were recovered and modern artefacts were noted, but no archaeological features were observed. However, possible earthworks immediately outside the Sandhill Park boundary wall were noted; these may have been connected to the site of the lost chapel. [AIP] |
