Abstract:
A desk-based study was undertaken to identify the archeaological implications of the proposed constuction of a library and computer block on open ground alongside the Richmond Street frontage of the College. The study identified that the proposal area appeared to have been open ground from at least the late 17th century and had been developed in the early 19th century for domestic housing. Cellars appeared to have existed over most of the area to a depth of about two meteres. It was uncertain if Fairfax Street was of medieval origin, but if it was then there may been some medieval buildings alongside. It was also identified that there was a potential for human burials to be located in this general area - human bones had been disturbed by building work on Gateway School in the 1950's or 1960's; a Roman burial was recorded in the Sites and Monuments Record from Cromwell Street; burials and Roman pottery were found on the site of the Hawthorne Building (although it was thought that these were of probable medieval date deriving from the cemetery attached to the church of St Mary of the Annunciation); and the burial of Civil War dead within the Newarke in 1645 was recorded in the borough records.
