Abstract: |
The assessment was undertaken following the submission of a planning application for the construction of two office buildings and a restaurant. The site lay just beyond the built-up area of the medieval Frankwell suburb, adjacent to the site of a medieval hospital. The place-name The Stew attached to the site was thought to have derived from the former existence of one or more fishponds associated with the hospital. There was little evidence for significant below ground archaeology. The standing building in the south west corner of the site was analysed, and was suggested to contain an early 18th century core.
