Abstract: |
Two trenches were excavated. Potential prehistoric activity is represent by a residual Bronze Age thumb scraper and a single struck flint. The presence of early medieval boundary ditches, pits and a possible small gravel quarry shows that during the 11th and 12th centuries the site was characterised by domestic activity associated with putative properties fronting the Vineyard. By the early 13th century this activity seems to have ended. A substantial layer of degraded garden soil that sealed the features described above represented the usage of the site as an orchard during the latter years of the 19th century and a number of masonry walls cut into this deposit represent structures likely to be associated with the public house that currently stands on the property.
