Abstract: |
Suffolk County Council's Archaelogical Service undertook a small scale excavation on the motte of Eye Castle. The funding was provided by a European Union grant (under Objective 5B). The excavation was aimed at deducing the relationship between the curtain wall with the motte and keep. The removal vegetation and topsoil revealed the end of both the internal and external walls. Further excavation into the fabric of the motte itself confirmed that the curtain walls ended at the point where they were exposed, were not truncated, and did not appear, at that level, to have adjoined any other structure than the motte. It seemed likely, therefore, that the curtain walls were connected to the keep at a higher level by some form of bridge structure. [Au(abr)] |
