Abstract:
A programme of archaeological trial trenching was undertaken on a cropmarks complex at Ling Hall Quarry. The aim of the evaluation was to determine the state of survival of the below ground features indicated in a series of aerial photographs taken in 1990 after the quarry site was first evaluated in 1989. The results clearly demonstrated that a significant Iron Age settlement survived below the level of the topsoil. Evidence for at least one roundhouse survived, including postholes, a ring-gully and a hearth pit. Other curving gullies may have also represented structures within the settlement. Decorated and plain pottery recovered from the features dated from the Middle to Late Iron Age. Other finds included daub, flint and cremated bone. Charred plant remains were likely to have been abundant over the site although no permanently waterlogged deposits were encountered. [Au]
