Abstract: |
Three test pits were excavated along the southern side of the South Choir of Ely Cathedral prior to the proposed installation of a new drainage system. An archaeological assessment was undertaken to establish whether any deposits of archaeological interest would be disturbed in the course of this work. Of particular concern was the presence of the medieval monks cemetery and the possible existence of associated sarcophagi which were know to exist south of the Choir. Another aim was to determine whether a 19th century drainage system existed to the south of the Choir, and if so whether it could be utilised in the proposed development. The evidence produced by the test pits suggested that the ground had been severely disturbed by the installation of 19th century and modern services. One badly truncated sarcophagus was the only secure evidence of burials in the area. The lack of human remains suggested either, that this was not an area of dense burials, or more likely that the graves had been disinterred in the 19th century prior to the installation of services.
