Abstract:
Three evaluation trenches were excavated in advance of the development of the site. These measured approximately 15m x 4m and revealed that a sequence of archaeological deposits up to c.1.50m thick had survived beneath a horizon of modern rubble. These deposits consisted entirely of post-medieval cut features. Collectively, these had removed all original land surfaces and stratigraphy down to and into the natural brickearth and gravel. There was no survival of deposits or features earlier than late 16th to 17th century. The archaeological deposits seen in the evaluation indicated that the site had been used extensively for the quarrying of brickearth early in the 17th century, and subsequently for the disposal of refuse in the 17th and 18th centuries. The only features earlier than this were two late 16th/early 17th century ditches which may have formed part of a field boundary, or provided drainage for a thoroughfare. [Au(abr)]
