Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken within the graveyard of the church. Extant gravestones were present within the site and measuring around 600mm below the gravestones were 15 skeletons dating from the mid-late 18th century to the early 19th century. The graves had been cut in three parallel rows aligned east-west. From the 15 skeletons 11 were complete whilst the remainder extended beyond the limits of the watching brief and either represented skulls or feet. The skeletons had been placed on top of each other with a maximum of 5 high within a single grave plot. Each of the skeletons had been buried within a wooden coffin, the remains of which had vanished, however the handles, nails and studs of the coffins had survived although the majority were in a very decayed condition.
