Abstract:
An archaeological desktop assessment was undertaken on two sites for proposed development Investigations in the surrounding area had revealed an extensive landscape with evidence from prehistory onwards. The sites lay within an extensive Roman landscape, and had continued in agricultural use into the medieval and modern periods. SMR entries, for the sites, indicated extensive scatters of Neolithic and Bronze Age flints. The site lay within an area of ritual significance, with up to 12 burial monuments in, or around the immediate area of the site. There was little to suggest important Saxon or medieval activity in the area and the site may have lain in a marginal area in these periods, despite its proximity to the Icknield Way. The survival of remains of all periods may have been jeopardised by quarrying, but the possibility of archaeological features within the site still remained reasonably high. Although the site itself had no find spots, it was apparent from the SMR entries to the north of Rectory Farm that high status settlements were widely spread in the area, and subsidiary features including structures could be present.
