Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of submission of a planning application to redevelop the site. The assessment showed that the site lay in an area of high archaeological potential particularly relating to the medieval and post-medieval periods. The site lay within one of the London Borough of Islington's Archaeological Priority Areas which described the medieval priory of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. The site lay within the outer precinct of the priory and medieval buildings and pits may be found upon the site as well as possibly the 'little torrent' stream. Maps showed houses and backyards on the site in the post-medieval period. Test pits monitored on the site revealed a brick wall and possible brick cellar floors. The main impact to archaeological deposits came from the 1100mm depth of ground reduction and further 600mm depth of five footings or pads proposed upon the site. The sloping nature of the ground around the site suggested that the northern part of the site had been terraced prior to the construction of the current buildings. Over 1m depth of post-medieval dumping was found in the test pits and it was this that would be impacted upon by the proposed works. It was recommended that the proposed works should be closely monitored by archaeologists, perhaps in the form of a watching brief, to ensure the recording of any important remains that my be revealed.
