Abstract: |
The archaeological potential of farmland at Vearse Farm was undertaken. It was proposed to build a pay-and-play golf course, together with a clubhouse and driving range on the site. The evaluation found little evidence for previous human activity below the ground. However, documentary and topographic evidence demonstrated that activity did take place in the past. This evidence took the form of earthworks which suggested that for most of its history Vearse was used for pastoral land uses, predominantly stock-keeping. The failure to produce any archaeological features was not taken to demonstrate that the site was archaeologically sterile, but that the potential did exist for further investigation to yield important remains.
