Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. The site was considered to have a low to medium potential for containing archaeological remains of local/regional significance. Given the absence of a good water source other than springs, and the general low level of known sites of this period in the area the potential for prehistoric remains was low. The area of Littlemore, Sandford, Blackbird Leys and Cowley was the centre of the regionally important Roman Oxford pottery industry. Several sites relating to this industry were known within the study area and the potential for a further site relating to this activity was considered to be of low to medium potential. Littlemore was not known to have originated in the Saxon period and given the relative lack of sites of this date in the area the potential for similarly dated remains was considered to be low. It was interesting that so little was known of the early medieval settlement of Littlemore. The present buildings were set well back form the Cowley Road frontage and were known in their present positions from at least 1819 and probably from at least 1774. The arrangement of the buildings suggested that earlier in their life they may have been a small farm. It may have been that they continued the same usage of the land-owning through from the medieval period and that these buildings replaced earlier buildings in a similar position. Therefore, the site was considered to be of low to medium potential for medieval remains. Evidence from the post-medieval period was present in the form of the present buildings. The outbuildings had gone through successive rebuilding phases. How much of the original was present was unknown as the buildings had not been examined. The potential for any significant buried remains of this period was low. [Au(adp)]
