Abstract: |
South East Water kindly agreed to fund a field evaluation of a sunken feature on their land at Claypits Reservoir. The feature appeared on several maps of the 19th century, marked 'DW' or 'Draw Well'. The evaluation consisted of a single machine-excavated trench and two hand-dug test pits. The fieldwork was undertaken by the newly formed Hangers Archaeological Society, supervised by Southern Archaeological Services Ltd. Results demonstrated that the feature was a dew pond. The discovery of an extensive deposit of clinker bear the feature suggested the presence of a coal-fired steam engine at some time, and the possibility of a well shaft could not be ruled out.
