Abstract:
An archaeological assessment was undertaken of the proposed development site and adjoining property at the south end of Bridge Street. The site lay close to the remains of several medieval monuments within a designated Conservation Area on the north bank of the river Coquet. Its position in relation to the medieval church and late medieval bridge, in particular, suggested that it was likely to have been subject to medieval occupation. However, topographical constraints, coupled with historic map evidence suggested that medieval settlement had not extended significantly east of the bridge, indicating that the assessment site was on the eastern periphery of the town prior to its expansion in the 19th century. There was no evidence for specific settlement or other activities within the site prior to the later 17th century, when a school was first recorded there. Likewise, no surviving structural remains or previous ground investigations suggested that any remains of such activities were preserved there. Indeed, the present topography of the site, which had probably been excavated during a recent episode of construction work, reduced the likelihood that significant archaeological remains had survived. In view of the proximity of the site to known medieval monuments it was recommended that limited excavation by trial pitting be carried out to evaluate the potential survival of buried deposits from the medieval period or earlier.
