Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a hospital car park extension in the centre of Shaftesbury, a Saxon burh. A previous auger survey had revealed a linear depression at the site, possibly the former line of a road or a defensive ditch. During the evaluation, a range of deposits dating from the 12th-13th century to the present day was revealed. Medieval remains included the footings of a substantial stone structure, along with broadly contemporary features which included a crude yard surface, a small ditch, a well and a buried ground surface. Residual prehistoric material, clay pipe fragments and late Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery were recovered. The deposits were found to lie within the precinct of a nearby abbey. It was concluded that the site had probably lain within the Saxon town, and that the remains were of high local and regional significance. [Au(adp)]
