Abstract: |
The area consisted of land within the corridor of Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site. However, this particular stretch was not Scheduled. A study of the map evidence suggested that the site of the proposed development remained as open land up until 1921 when a 'Picture Theatre' was erected upon the site. This was a rather ephemeral building, being constructed of timber on slight foundations, with a corrugated iron roof. There was, therefore, a strong possibility of encountering undisturbed archaeological remains within the area of the proposed development. [Au(abr)] |
