Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a new electricity supply for the White Tower of the Tower of London. Early medieval masonry of the west drum of Coldharbour Gate was exposed and recorded, and the upper parts of possible post-medieval soil horizons and pit features filled with domestic rubbish were investigated at the north-west corner of the White Tower. Brick structures which formed parts of the 1717 and 1840s Main Guard buildings were recorded, as were other structures, including part of the Carriage Storehouse built in 1717 and replaced in 1825, and the 1840s concrete munitions railway. Several Victorian and modern contexts were also recorded. [Au(abr)] |
