Abstract: |
Excavations were undertaken during building work at the Church of St. Mary Magdelen. Details of the rebuilding of the church in the 15th century were revealed, and evidence for a further phase of building was also found. An early mortar floor was discovered beneath a layer of silts and these were interpreted as flood levels, probably the reason for the raising of the church by about 0.70m in the 15th century. Observations made during the course of further building work, in the north side of the nave confirmed the general sequence seen in the south side, although some details remained obscure. The church site was that of a low mound of uncertain origin, and a brief survey of levels was carried out around the churchyard. [Au(abr)] |
