Abstract: |
The watching brief identified evidence for human occupation of the Avon River valley from the prehistoric period onwards, charting environmental changes due to human influence from analysis of pollen samples and the Carbon-14 dating. Analysis of pollen remains suggested that a local landscape of marshy vegetation predominated within a wider landscape of largely deforested open grassland. Comparison of the pollen assemblage with other sites suggested that the River Avon valley was under a livestock farming regime with limited arable cultivation in the later prehistoric period, tentatively dated to the later Bronze Age. The use of this part of the floodplain as a hay meadow through medieval, post-medieval and modern times was identified from visible and relict earthworks, documentary and cartographic sources.
