Abstract:
Observations and recording were undertaken during stripping out and repairs to the ceiling of the staff room at the Oxfordshire County Museum, which occupied a Grade II Listed Building. The house was believed to be of 17th century origin, with most of the original fabric confined to the rear parts, which included the staff room. The removal of the lathe and plaster ceiling within the room revealed a massive timber cross beam, which at one end was fixed into the brick fabric of the internal passage. A small section of plaster was removed from a first floor room within an 18th century extension. The brick fabric was observed to be of a similar type to that recorded within the staff room, and it was suggested that the creation of the internal passage dated to the late 18th century. Evidence for a possible stair void blocked by the passage may have indicated that the present ceiling pre-dated the 18th century. The principal beam was also likely to be of earlier origin. It was concluded that a number of features had suggested that vestigial and sometimes ex-situ remains of pre-18th century work remained, but that a 17th century date could not be independently demonstrated.
