Abstract: |
The archaeological assessment was carried out on a medieval church. The chancel floor at Kneesal potentially masked earlier steps up to the altar and possibly even burials. The general evidence suggested that the Victorian alterations were thorough and in many ways insensitive to the historic fabric. Moving the 15th century pews to the chancel and positioning them alongside the walls had its drawbacks as the piscona would be obscured, the decorative ends of the pews would not be visible to best effect, and the original timberwork might suffer from the proximity of background heaters. The inscribed stone fragment were an important archaeological find and should be repositioned carefully in a safe location, ideally where it could still be seen to good effect. The main problem area may prove to be the graveyard, in the form of and gravestone fragments, pottery and other artefacts disturbed from lower levels by subsequent disturbance. It was concluded that an archaeological watching brief should be carried out. [Au(adp)] |
