Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the construction of a new building. Two trial trenches were dug measuring up to 2m long by c.2m wide. These revealed archaeological deposits of medieval and post-medieval date. Trench 1 revealed two walls associated with the cellar of a 19th century brewery and the 20th century rubble with which it was backfilled during the demolition of the building. Trench 2 revealed a series of layers above the natural Lower Greensand of which the lowest contained two sherds of pottery of 13th century date. The succeeding layers contained pottery and ceramic building material of post-medieval date. [Au(abr)] |
