Abstract:
A town survey was undertaken of Wetherby, a market town situated on the north bank of the River Wharfe. Much of Wetherby was destroyed by fire during the Scottish raids in the 14th century and again by fire, in 1723, when around half of the property within the town was burnt. There was evidence of prehistoric, Roman and medieval activity within or in close proximity to the town. It was possible that settlement may have evolved from the Roman period since indication of Roman activity had been found immediately north and north-west of the town centre, although the extent of occupation was unknown. Although the town appeared to retain some of its medieval street pattern, the majority of the buildings were believed to have dated from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Historians had noted the lack of antiquities in the town over a period of time and no architectural features, which suggested long time settlement, were present. Development of the town appeared to have been slow with little interest or investment by landowners until the early 19th century. Cartographic for the 18th and 19th centuries, reflected the slow rate of growth. [Au(adp)]
