Abstract:
A desk-top assessment was undertaken in order to determine the archaeological setting of a Conservation Area. No prehistoric evidence had been recorded in the parish, as the area had been subjected to a series of inundations resulting in the deposition of several metres of alluvium since this period. Roman coins and pottery had been found within the town of Long Sutton but no Saxon activity had been recorded. However, a church had been mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086, indicating a late Saxon precursor to the medieval town. A medieval church, largely built in the 12th and 13th centuries, lay within the town, and a medieval or earlier sea bank lay in the vicinity, although it was situated outside the present Conservation Area. A number of post-medieval buildings survived within Long Sutton. It was noted that the lack of sub-surface investigation within the town limited the scope of archaeological prediction for the survival and preservation of ancient remains, and highlighted a pressing requirement for such works.
