Abstract: |
Archaeological work was carried out at Craswall Priory prior to and during consolidation; namely the production of an archive index, a detailed survey of the areas to be consolidated, and the supervision of any protective backfilling undertaken. The index to the archive, which includes published and unpublished material, English Heritage and CHAU records, and photographs, has not yet been cross-referenced or studied. The survey drawings prepared prior to consolidation also show the extent of root damage; overlays were made to show the consolidated and part-buried sections of the monument. The walls surveyed are essentially single-phase structures, although some reconstruction attempts have been made in recent times. Stabilisation was to have been achieved by carefully backfilling selected areas with material obtained from the spoilheaps of earlier excavations - this source proved inadequate, and imported crushed stone, overlaid with clean soil, was used instead. Several of the more collapsed parts of the site were protected in this way. Some recommendations were made as to the nature and extent of future work.[AIP] |
