Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of an application for the redevelopment of the site. A small number of archaeological finds and features were recorded on the proposed development site, but only Field IV, the moated site, and Field V, immediately to its west, had significant archaeological potential. Field I, VI and Field VII contained the remains of post-medieval or possibly earlier ditches on the western side. It was likely that additional ditches may be uncovered during development, but their archaeological significance was limited. Fields II and III had yielded a small number of late prehistoric flints from the eastern side, but these were thought to have been residual. In the southern part of Field V, a medieval pebble surface and two post holes were identified. These may have been part of a house platform and there was the possibility of further remains from this period in the area immediately to the west of the moated site. Little information existed about the medieval manor of Shinfield and any evidence would be significant. Field IV occupied the former moated site and probably contained a number of medieval buildings, possibly including the manor house. Although no archaeological remains had been identified from that area to date, the amount of archaeological investigation had been limited to an area of geophysical survey. This field had the highest potential for containing significant buried archaeology. [Au(abr)]
