Abstract: |
Previous archaeological investigations had revealed sunken structural remains, possibly tanning vats and demolition debris. During this evaluation, several features and deposits ranging from the medieval period to the present day were identified. Two medieval pits were located at the eastern edge of the site, one had been lined with wickerwork and both pits had probably served an industrial function. Two wooden stakes adjacent to these pits perhaps represented the remains of an associated superstructure. The remains of several brick buildings, walls and surfaces were revealed some of these were probably associated with the tannery documented at the site in the 19th century. Animal bones recovered during the investigation indicated that the tannery had processed sheepskins. In addition to 18th-20th century artefacts, a small quantity of medieval pottery and a single prehistoric flint tool were also recovered. [Au(abr)] |
